back of shirtFor many years the Badgerland Striders have had a youth running program in conjunction with our Lakefront Marathon.  Over the past several years the program has grown and gotten better thanks to the hard work of our volunteers, the coaches and PARENTS!  It has been our goal to provide a safe and fun environment for kids to learn life-lessons like: setting goals, persevering and responsibility to name a few.  Over 125 kids participated in the program last year and this year we are hoping for even more.  While the kids were being taught by the very capable coaches from the Girls on the Run of Southeastern WI, the adults were invited to “lace ’em up” and take a run with Striders.  The response was over-whelming and we were pleased to have an average of over 15 on a weekly basis traveling an approx. 3 mile course, at their own pace.

From Miller Park to the Domes to Milwaukee County Parks, the kids seemed to have fun (as did the adults) and logged their miles to reach the goal of 25 at the end of the 10 weeks before taking the final 1.2 miles at the Lakefront Marathon and finishing through the very chute that the winner of the Marathon will travel through a short time later.

Kelly Corteen, Youth Director for the Striders has been working on the details of this years program and is expecting to open registration by the end of May.  Check this website often to get updates and/or “Like Us” on our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/groups/496736863752671/ and get the absolute latest news.  We are excited to see this program grow and toward developing future running Striders.
