Strider Half – 2017 Race Recap

Milwaukee's Premiere Half Marathon Delivers Again...

Posted by Tom Buthod

The 2017 Strider Half Marathon had perhaps the best conditions for this race or any Strider Race in a long time.  With a start temperature of 64 degrees and low humidity, conditions were absolutely perfect.  The race itself went just about as well from a great performance by the runners to outstanding execution by our volunteers to a rollicking good post-race party!

Where else can you get great conditions, a great course, a cool finisher medal, an awesome shirt, a delicious hot breakfast, and plenty of delicious Hofbrau Original?  And for only $28!!!???!!!  The Badgerland Striders deliver this kind of value because we work really hard to place all of our efforts into putting on the best races possible.  Any profits from our races go right back into the club and the Wisconsin running community.

Let us know how we can make it better at striderhalf@gmail.com.

849 smart runners chose the Strider Half and crossed the finish line in style.  Plenty of smiling faces were seen all over the course and in the Estabrook Beer Garden.  Check out the photos at:

2017 Strider Half Results

The 2017 race was won by Martin Hinze of Milwaukee who led wire to wire with a time of 1:12:25.  Joseph Skurski of Iowa City, IA closed really fast for second place only ten seconds behind Martin.  Third place went to Jacob Gray in 1:14:10.

Jenny Zwagerman of Shorewood won her second Strider Half Marathon with a time of 1:21:40, three minutes faster than her 2014 win!  Lisa Johnson of Mount Pleasant was second in 1:25:48 followed by Aileen Cole of San Francisco in 1:27:22. All top 3 winners, male and female, received a customized beer stein from Creative Fire Pottery, Wauwatosa.

For the fifth year in a row Hans Weissgerber III and his team at the Estabrook Beer Garden partnered with the Striders to cook up a fantastic hot breakfast for runners and volunteers with plenty of ice cold Hofbrau Original flowing.  Tasty!

We had great safety and logistical support from Milwaukee County Parks, North Shore Fire Rescue, Milwaukee Fire Department, Medical College of Wisconsin, and many area police agencies.

Last but MOST importantly, none of the fun happens without our outstanding volunteers.  To make this race happens, did you know this race needs more than 1 volunteer for every 10 runners?  What’s really cool is we always have plenty of people willing to help out (and join in the fun!).  Always remembers to thank your volunteers!  Here are your 2017 Strider Half Volunteers:
